Bay bridge repairs start Sunday night, Oct 16

A Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) spokesman said work would start at 7pm and continue each night until Thursday.

Repairs will start on the night of Sunday, October 16, to repair the damaged Batemans Bay bridge.

The bridge failed three times in the week beginning October 2, culminating in a three-hour breakdown on Saturday, October 8, during heavyhomeward bound school holiday traffic.

“Motorists are advised of changed traffic conditions from this Sunday night as essentialmaintenance work is carried out on Batemans Bay Bridge,” the RMS spokesmansaid.

“Roads and Maritime Services understands the importance of the Batemans Bay Bridge to thecommunity and is working to ensure a reliable crossing is provided at this location.

“Work will be carried out to replace a damaged haul rope and repair damage to a wheel mountingbracket, which are all components of the bridge opening system.

“The bridge span will continue to be closed while work takes place and Roads and Maritime hasbeen in contact with local marine operators to keep them informed of work to be carried out toprovide a safe and reliable bridge opening.

“To reduce the impact to motorists, work will be carried out from Sunday 16 to Thursday 20 Octoberbetween 7pm and 5am.”

One lane will be closed and traffic control and a reduced40 km/h speed limit will be in place during work hours.

“Roads and Maritime thanks motorists for their patience while this essential maintenance work is carriedout,” the spokesman said.
