The small town of Merriwa is home to the “bra fence”, which encourages locals, and passers-by, to hang up a bra and donate to the McGrath Foundation as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This is the second year the community has had the fence on display, along the Golden Highway coming into Merriwa from the west.

“Everyone has always got on board with fundraising for Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” organiser Sheree Kelly said.

“So, with the fence proving successful in 2015, we brought it back.

“This is a very important foundation to get behind because the fundraising we’re doing with the bra fence all goes straight to the McGrath Foundation to support breast cancer care nurses.

“It’s imperative to us to support these nurses, particularly as many of them are from rural areas.

“The idea of the fence came to a group of us one night.

“And, it attracted a lot of attention last year with many people leaving a bra with their postcode and a message dedicated to a loved one effected by breast cancer.”

More than 16,000 new cases of breast cancer have been diagnosed in Australia in 2016, accounting for 12.3 per cent of all new cancers diagnosed.

“Last year we raised $500, so this time we have set a goal of $700,” Ms Kelly said.

“We are calling for everyone to get behind the cause, go have a look at the fence, hang up a bra and donate.”

Ms Kelly also wished to express her thanks to Bob and Bev Telfer, who own the fence, for allowing the bra fence to continue and for maintaining the area.
