Butterflies hit back with win

STUNG by a first-round loss, Spring Gully Butterflies thrashedrival Bendigo Lawn Rising in Friday night’s round two of Bendigo Tennis Association Premier League.

Butterflies won 9-64 to 4-46.

The rubbers tally went 4-2 the Gully’s way in the Quest Bendigo Central-backed league.

Butterflies’ Matt Hartland scored a 6-4 6-1 victory in the number one singles clash with Jacob Grieves.

Danielle Bowles defeated Rashelle Blencowe, 6-3 7-5, and teamed with Hartland to win the doubles.

Rising’s wins were achieved by Jeremy Abel against Linda Gallagher, and by Abel and Lachlan Hewitt in the doubles clash with Gallagher and Jamie Brown.

• Bendigo Lawn Quest won a hard-fought battle with Epsom by eight games.

Quest won three of the four singles matches.

Isaac Watson, Bradley Reeves and Stuart Johansen won in straight sets.

The sole victory for Epsom was by Jono Guy against Simon Kelly, 4-6 6-1 10-8.

Epsom fought back to win the doubles.

A highlight was the 6-4 2-6 10-2 win by Jack Baker and Mark Semmens against Watson and Reeves.

The rubbers were locked on three-all as Epsom won 8-58 to 6-50.

Bendigo Lawn Quest was the only line-up to achieve back-to-back wins.

• South Bendigo scored a 22-game win against Strathfieldsaye.

After the final rally, South led 9-62 to 4-40 and the rubbers tally, 4-2.

Jordan Hicks played superb tennis to beat Strathfieldsaye captain Terry Smith, 6-3 6-2.

Peter Somerville was also in hot form for South Bendigo.

Meanwhile, section one was played on Saturday at BTA headquarters in Nolan Street.

Spring Gully Panthers 4-54 lt BLTC Stingers 6-68; BLTC Infants 1-21 lt Spring Gully Racqueteers 9-75; and BLTC Sensation 6-66 d Spring Gully Phoenix 4-58.

Premier League ladder: Bendigo Lawn Quest 10 points, 115.5 per cent; South Bendigo 9, 113.8; Strathfieldsaye 9, 86.9; Spring Gully Butterflies 7, 110.3; Bendigo Lawn Rising 7, 87.3; Epsom 6, 90.5.

Round three in premier league will be played this Friday from 6.30pm.
