Four men and a woman from Mermaid Beach and three men staying at Surfers Paradise were taken to hospital after suffering hallucinogenic symptoms.

One has been placed into an induced coma.

Bruce Pearce district duty officer on the Gold Coast said the three men at Surfers Paradise were hallucinating by the time police arrived.

“The nature of their behaviour is why police were called, mainly to back up the paramedics also to assess the situation,” Officer Pearce said.

“They were hallucinating, very odd behaviour and hence why they were transported by QAS.”

“It’s certainly difficult for someone that is sober to understand that type of behaviour and what they are going through and I’m sure it was a very scary situation for those people.” Eight people have been rushed to hospital after a mass drug overdose on the Gold Coast: https://t.co/aEKhAnCOazpic.twitter南京夜网/NRAKYUL8OL— 7News Yahoo7 (@Y7News) 15 October 2016

The officer said when police arrived there were several people swimming in the rear canal.

“Fortunately there was a sober member of the group here, who’s contacted QAS and police.”

Paul Young operations supervisor at Queensland Ambulance service said they were called out to the Islander at Surfers Paradise about 2am.

“We treated three males one male was in a serious condition, all three were transported to Gold Coast Hospital,” Mr Young said

“The one male in a serious condition was intubated and sedated and is currently in not a good condition and Gold Coast Uni.

“The drugs that he has taken has compromised his system, we’ve put him in an induced coma or sedated him, just to make transport easier.”

He said one of the men was jumping on the couch when emergency services arrived.

“The substance they took is unknown, it was a mix of something, but we’re unsure of what that is.”

“What it made them do was either hallucinate, see things that weren’t really there, very agitated, doing things they wouldn’t normally do, not rational with their decision making at all and especially in a high rise that was a bit of a concern as well.”
