Pool officially opened

Picture: Supplied Though the community has been enjoying its new pool for more than three months, the Burnie Aquatic Centre redevelopment was officially opened by representatives from federal, state and local government on Saturday.

BurnieMayor Anita Dow was joined by Premier Will Hodgman and Senator Stephen Parry for the opening, which coincided with The Big Splash –a family day oflive music, pool games, asausage sizzle, aquatreasure hunts, a jumping castle andgiveaways.

The $8.8 million project received $3 million from the Australian Government’s Community Development grants program.

The Tasmanian Government also contributed $3 million under its Communities, Sports and Recreation grants program, and the Burnie City Council funded the remaining $2.8 million.

Alderman Dow paid tribute to the Aquatic Centre Working Group, who oversaw the development.

“The Burnie Aquatic Centre project is a great example of community driven initiativescomingto fruition,” she said.

“TheAquatic Centre Working Group began working closely with Council many years ago to design and lobby for anindoor pool, and now we have this great facility that will benefit the whole community.”

Premier Will Hodgman said the aquatic centre is an asset to the community.

“The newly-designedcentrehas an eight-lane, 25-metre learn-to-swim and lap pool providing access regardless of season or weather,” he said.

“In addition, there’s a new outdoor children’s splash play.”

The weekend was the first time visitors to the pool could access the outdoor splash pad, which is open for six months of the year.

Alderman Dow said the Burnie community has embraced the new facility since its opening in early July.

“Attendance numbers have already exceeded expectations, with many casual users as well as sporting groupstaking advantage of the new indoor pool,” she said.

The aquatic centre is located at 1-5 Terrylands Street, Terrylands.

Its opening hours are 5am-8pm on weekdays, and 8.30am-7pm on weekends and public holidays.
